How to do good crack seal?

Why do we always mention pavement cracks? Because there is no road without cracks!

The cracks are  typically caused by base failure, moisture intrusion, freeze/thaw, heavy traffics or other environmental factors. In addition to being unsightly, it can cause greater road diseases such as aligator cracks and potholes. If left alone, it will cause higher repair costs in the future.

So how to repiar cracks and maximize the crack seal life? Below are several factor should be considered.

1. Select the right sealant

Sealants should be selected based on pavement condition, climate, pavement movement, service life needed and sealant properties. Generally speaking, cooler climates require more flexible sealants than hotter climates. In hot climates, there is less movement of the pavement surface in general and, therefore, no need for a very flexible material.

2. Keep sealant at proper temperature during application process.

Consult your sealant suppier the temperature range and keep your sealant at that range, no lower and no higher. Lower will affect the adhesion, while higher will reduce the properties of sealant.

3. Consider Weather and climate factor

Spring and Autumn is the best crack seal reason. cracks are in an average status—not completely open ( in winter) and not completely closed (in summer)

Do not do crack seal work if there will be rainning.

4. Neccesary steps before crack seal

Route the cracks in to regular to increase the adhesion between the sealant and crack edge.  Dry and clean the debris and moisture is also important to make a good crack seal.
